What is the Community Support Fund?
If you're busty, you know the difference a well-fitted bra makes. From back pain to self-esteem to exercise and more, a good bra facilitates a happier and more comfortable life. But not everyone can afford a good bra. Enter the Community Support Fund: money set aside to help out folks who don't have the funds to get the right bras for them.
Who contributes?
Anyone can contribute to the bra fund! This is a pay-it-forward and help out your neighbours kind of system. If you have the means and desire to pay into the fund, you can! Broad will also contribute to the fund on a quarterly basis.
How can you contribute?
Visit our brick-and-mortar shop at 2097 Danforth Avenue in Toronto, and ask to add a donation at the checkout. You can donate any amount, and it doesn't have to be a lot! Consider asking your fitter to round up your purchase total to support the fund.
Not local, or can't make it to the shop? No worries! You can make a donation through our online shop here.
Who uses the Fund?
Anyone who doesn't have the means to pay for a well-fitted bra can use the fund, no questions asked. We're using the honour system here! Here are some things to consider:
- Do you want to use the Fund because you require it in order to purchase a bra, or because you'd simply prefer to pay less? If it's a preference, please consider a layaway payment plan instead, so that the Fund can support folks with greater need.
- Take into account your identity-based privilege, earning potential, access to financial support from your family or network, and savings.
- These can be uncomfortable things to reflect on! Most of us aren't taught to talk openly about money. This infographic by Alexis J. Cunningfolk at the Worts and Cunning Apothecary may help.
- We created the Fund as an act of solidarity with folks who are struggling. We've been there! You (and your boobs!) deserve support.
The above considerations have been adapted from our pals at Firefly Creative Writing, who adapted theirs from Bear Hebert's work. We all learn from each other! (Firefly has a bursary program for their writing workshops. You'll have a blast with them!)
How can you use the Fund?
Shopping in-store? Pull a ticket from the Community Board by our front desk and give it to your fitter at the checkout. Tickets on the Community Board are in denominations of $25. If you just need a little help, you can take one or two tickets. If you need more help, take more tickets.
